San Galgano Abbey weddings

San Galgano Abbey weddings are special. This is a wedding location that really is unique, getting married at the abbey is an experience that you and your guests will always remember. The abbey is located in the Val di Merse and lies on flat ground surrounded by low hills. In April and May it isn’t uncommon to see the abbey surrounded by lush green fields perhaps full with poppies, these then turn to more golden hues in June. In late July and August you may be able to see the abbey surrounded by sunflowers. There is also a vineyard that overlooks the abbey and of course you don’t have to go far to find an olive grove.

San Galgano Abbey facts

San Galgano Abbey weddings are growing in popularity and it’s east to see why. The massive abbey allows you to get married in a church but still be outdoors.

You can hire the abbey to either have your own wedding ceremony or if you decide to have a civil wedding in Italy the nearest town is Chiusdino and they will celebrate your civil wedding at the San Galgano Abbey.

Most people choose to get married in the main part of the abbey under the beautiful blue skies and shimmering Tuscan sun. Here is an example of an outdoor San Galgano Abbey wedding.

If you are unlucky enough to get rain on your wedding day there is still the possibility to get married at the abbey as the wedding could then held in The Chapter House which is a large covered side room overlooking the cloisters that still has its roof probably due to the fact that it’s ceiling is beautifully vaulted.

How far in advance should we book for a wedding around June 2018? Thanks! Mari

It depends on which day of the week you want. If you want a certain date and maybe a Saturday too then I would suggest a year in advance. The town hall may not even accept bookings further in advance than this. If you are looking at a midweek wedding then there is likely to be more chance of availability. If you have flexibility in the wedding date this will give you many more options.

In order to book the abbey, you need to contact the town hall of Chiusdino. If you have any issues contacting them let me know.

I was wondering how much a wedding would cost there at the Abbey. I was there over 20 years ago on an art history trip in university. Being in a church and looking up directly at the heavens left an impression.
We haven’t set a date yet but it’s a second wedding for both my fiance and I. It would be just us and maybe another couple as witnesses. What kind of packages do you have available?
It’s a long shot, we’re from Canada, but I always thought it would be a great location for a wedding.
